Patty Jane opens her House of Curls, a salon catering to working class ladies. It is affordable, fun, popular, home made snacks, coffee and drinks are provided. Ione is a wonderful baker. It is a salon staffed by ladies for ladies. Old fashioned, but this book begins in the fifties and continues on. Patty Jane House of Curl Lorna Landvik Books Reviews
I have read several of Landvik's books ~~ my favorite being Angry Housewives ~~ and this is a good debut novel, entertaining and a quick read. I took it on vacation and was glad to have something light-hearted to read. I am also glad to see that Landvik has improved her writing talents since this book too. =0)
Patty Jane gets deserted by her handsome husband just before her daughter was born ~~ and if it wasn't for her mother-in-law's support and her sister, Harriet's support ~~ Patty Jane didn't know what she would do. These three women struggle with issues of life ~~ love, laughter, death, romance and friendship ~~ together with their newfound friends in a beauty salon that Patty and Harriet started up together. This is not your typical salon either ~~ where else in Minneapolis would you find delectable Norwegian desserts and listen to harp music being played while your hair is being done?
It is a cute book ~~ a light-hearted read and fun ~~ it's absolutely perfect for a beach read if you need something to read while sunning on the beach.

This is so much more than hair and nails and beauty products. (I wish we had one in our neighborhood.) This is a place where you can take care of the whole you, not just outside appearance. It's kind of like Oprah meets Paul Mitchell and then some! Getting to that place though was sometimes a lovely happy time of love and joy; other times of anguish. Besides her sister Harriet and her adorable Norwegian mother in law Ione,(Still not sure how to pronounce that name) her daughter and shop regulars, the unusual/unlikely family Patty Jane brought together through her brainstorming solution of making her Beauty Shop more than hair and makeup was what develops this story into complex sub plots and deep meaning. This is a really wonderful read with entertaining characters from a Minnesota town. You won't be bored as this is a page turner with heart and humor. P.S. I gave it only four stars because I'm so in love with the next book she wrote after House of Curl, The Book Club.
I enjoyed this book. I’ve loaned it to several friends and they have all loved it too. The characters are well written and delightful. The way the story is woven together makes sense and keeps the story moving along. I loved how the characters had flaws that made them unique. Really great book about rolling with what life brings and caring about each other.
Disclaimer This is NOT an impartial review. Second time I've read this book, initially when it was first published and was recommended by a friend. My first copy was loaned out so many times I lost track of it, and when I read that there was a sequel coming out, I ordered it again, both to refresh my memory of the story, and to complete my set of Lorna Lanvik's books. I remembered absolutely loving the book the first time around, and time has not diminished that. Even if it were not a great story, I would have felt the same way.....here comes the disclaimer.....because I grew up in the same neighborhood as Ms. Landvik, went to all the same schools, had some of the same teachers, albeit a big earlier than her. The street names and places in this book are actual places. I ate a lot of Stratoburgers at the Airloha drive-in and saw a lot of movies at the Leola theater. That part of south Minneapolis was a great place to live and grow up. The book is a lovely reminder of that gentler tme. But no matter where you spent your childhood, I think you'll still relate to this book, because this story could have happened anywhere, and the story, sometimes funny and sometimes tragic, will tug on your heart. Thanks again, Lorna Landvik, for this wonderful book.
